It was the file, Zach told himself as he punched his pillow one more time. The pressure had built up, as it always did, until he had to drag it out and go over it all again, reliving the nightmare anew. He knew on some level that he was compelled to do it out of the guilt he still felt. And although it had taken him a while, he’d finally realized the compulsion came upon him whenever he’d gone too long without thinking about it, as if his conscience was reminding him he had no right to peace, not while his son’s killer still walked free.

So he’d been off balance anyway, with every emotion brought to the surface as it always was when he went through that damned file. And then she’d been there, so close, looking up at him with that worried look. He knew others worried about him, his father, the staff here at the foundation, Josh. But somehow it was different coming from Reeve. Perhaps because they’d shared the nightmare so closely.

And apparently still did, he thought, remembering what she’d said about her own dreams.

Maybe it was that, too. But whatever it was, no one had been more surprised than he was when the irresistible urge to kiss her had come over him. That he’d gone ahead and done it had startled him even more.

Maybe she’d been right, he thought as the first drifting sensation of sleep began. He was just tired.

The memory that he’d wanted to kiss her before, and often, didn’t manage to intrude before he slipped off completely.

This time when he dreamed of Scotty, Reeve was there with him, sharing the dread of awakening, and somehow the sharing lightened the burden.

When he woke up the room was light, and the usual waking pain was numbed by surprise. Usually he was up, showered and on his way out before the sun cleared the horizon.

When he glanced at the clock on the small, bright-red nightstand that had come out of Scotty’s room, he blinked in disbelief. But the combination of the sunlight and the numbers—7:03—were undeniable; for the first time in years he’d overslept. He felt better than he had in a long time; he’d almost forgotten what it was like to feel truly rested.

He was in front of the mirror shaving when he remembered the dream. He felt the sting as the razor blade nicked and realized his hand had jerked. For a moment he just stood there, staring at his reflection in the mirror. He didn’t look any different, he thought. So why did he feel as if something momentous had happened inside him?

He shoved the sensation away, burying it beneath the rush of making up time. He finished quickly, dressed, and headed for the living room of his small apartment. Only then did he hear the voicemail tone ringing out from his cell phone. He usually brought the thing into the bedroom with him, but he’d forgotten last night.

He found it on the counter of his tiny kitchen.
